Podnuh’s Bar-B-Q was founded in Monroe, Louisiana in 1977 when the first location was opened on Louisville Avenue. The business was founded by three close friends: John Hopper, a local contractor and builder; James “Freddy” Moses (who had the original “vision” and concept for a barbeque restaurant), a traveling manufacturer’s representative for Bowden Manufacturing, Men’s Clothing; and Jerry Keever, a restaurant owner/operator of “Toe Toe’s Hamburgers,” also located in Monroe.
Since all three founders were to be equal “partners” in the ownership of the business, they decided to name the business “Podnuh’s” (Southern Slang for “Partner”), a term which was made famous by MLB player and Sports Broadcaster, Dizzy Dean during his weekly broadcast of “Baseball’s Game of the Week” during the 1960’s.
The “original” restaurant was moved (1985) further down Louisville to the corner of Louisville and North 19th Street. The original building was torn down to make way for a Ryan’s Steak House.
In 1981, Podnuh’s expanded into the Shreveport, LA market area with a location on Barksdale Highway (close to Barksdale Air Force Base).
In 1983, the business expanded into the Baton Rouge market area when John Hopper’s brother, Jarrell, became a “Podnuh” in the business and headed up the Baton Rouge operation. The first Baton Rouge restaurant was located on Florida Blvd. and opened in May of 1983.
By the turn of the 21st Century (2000), Podnuh’s Bar-B-Q had expanded its operation to 12 restaurant locations (four in Monroe/West Monroe, four in Shreveport/Bossier City, and four in Baton Rouge/Gonzales). They had become the largest barbeque restaurant chain within the state of Louisiana.
In August of 2000, all 12 locations and all operations were sold to an investment group based in Monroe, and the original “Podnuhs” (partners) went their separate ways.
In 2009, the Baton Rouge and Monroe market areas were “repurchased” by founding Podnuh, John Hopper. John was later reunited with his brother, Jarrell, in the spring of 2010. Once again, Jarrell became the Managing “Podnuh” for the Baton Rouge locations, while John continues to live in Monroe and operate the Monroe/West Monroe locations.
Since taking over the Baton Rouge and Monroe market areas, the “original” Podnuhs (Hopper and Hopper) have revived all the “original” Podnuh’s recipes and have restored all the “original” cooking methods and procedures.
Once again, Podnuh’s Bar-B-Q now delivers the highest quality of barbequed Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Smoked Sausage and Chicken (not to mention their Famous Baked Beans) that made them one of the most renowned barbeque restaurants in the South. In fact, Country and Western Entertainer, Tim McGraw, recently named Podnuh’s Bar-B-Q as his all-time favorite barbeque restaurant (People Magazine, Country Special Edition, August/September 2010).
